Last quarter I went to a Hoodie Allen concert and I took this photo with my phone so the quality isn't great. We were sitting in the balcony so we were above most of the lights, so the camera was able to capture the beams of light. During a theater production I feel like most of the time you don't want to see the actual beams of light, you just want the end product. During concerts I think that the beams are part of the show. They are defined through the fog coming from the fog machine. It creates an atmosphere of art and excitement that a concert requires.
Yes, there is an entire line of moving lights that specialize in "beam architecture" - not really even intended to light people, just the air
