Week 4: Ballpark

Yes, this is a picture of our beloved Anteater Ballpark. I like to park right up along the wall on the third story of the Mesa parking so that I may overlook the landscape below me during my breaks. These pictures were both taken on two different days, and at different times. On the left we have the ballpark during sunset on a semi-overcast day. There is almost a lavender quality to the light touching the field, probably due to the lavender clouds (Lonnie was right). On the right we have the ballpark in the middle of the afternoon. The light is such a pure white, and there is clarity in the color of the grass. The grass in the picture on the left is dull and muted, while the grass on the right is bright and vibrant. I noticed the lines in the grass differ from picture to picture, probably due to the different angles in which the light is hitting it. I think next time I'll see what it looks like at sunset without the clouds.

Week 4: Pride

This photo was taken at Long Beach Pride on a beautiful summer day! :) I'm no photographer, but I just wanted to capture how colorful and bright it was that day. I love the way the sun can sometimes create sunspots in a photograph, which sort of reminds me of the way a Leko light looks like with an ellipsoidal hard edge reflector. They're like little beams from the Leko on a photograph rather than against a wall, cyc, etc.! I love the colors in this too and the feeling of pride the flags represent to me and the LGBT community. It makes me want to use different gels to portray this same type of pride! Then of course, I just love the beauty of a summer's day and just the brightness of the white light coming from the sun with its faint rays of sunshine. I think the way lighting designers can illustrate this on a stage is very impressive.

Week 4

Sunrise on the Island

I took this picture back in September just on my iPhone, however this picture holds a lot of really special memories to me. I took this picture at sunrise on an island called Nalunega that is located about forty miles off the coast of Panama. It is inhabited by an indigenous group of people called the Guna Yala. Visiting this island and experiencing the culture of this indigenous group was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. I took this picture from a man made wooden dock at 5:45 in the morning surrounded by two of my closest friends. The lighting created by the sun coming up coloring the entire sky and ocean was incredibly moving. This picture has always served as an inspiration and reminder of this incredible experience and how I felt at that given moment. At some point I would love to use this picture as inspiration for a lighting design that could recreate the feeling I had at the time of this picture on stage.  

Week #4: Sunrise

Every Mondays and Wednesdays, I leave my house at 6 a.m. and arrive at UCI around 6:30 a.m.. By the time I park my car, the sky's usually cloudy with hues of blue and purple. Last Wednesday, however, the sky was filled with colors such as purple, pink, orange, and yellow. For a moment, I thought it was sunset and freaked out, but I double checked my clock and I was wrong. Looking at the sunrise, I couldn't help but feel warmth, happiness, and excitement inside while watching the sun rise. Yes, it's cheesy, but that was how I felt. I took this picture from the 3rd level of Mesa parking structure and it was actually the 5th or 6th picture I took. It was hard capturing that "hallelujah" moment, but I think this picture is the closest thing that could capture what I felt that morning. On a side note, that Wednesday was a really good day: I had class cancelled and hung out with my friend who I haven't seen for months. In a weird cosmic way, that beautiful morning made the rest of my day awesome.

Week 4: Christmas at Disneyland

I took this picture in January during the last week of Disneyland's Christmas celebration. I think of Disneyland as a massive, interactive piece of art, and this is more true at Christmas than at any other time. This picture is of the exterior of "It's a Small World," which was lit with Christmas lights at night. I think this is a stunning use of light - the front of this ride is covered in geometric shapes, and they have outlined each of these shapes in multicolored lights. The colors so beautiful and so carefully chosen - if you take the time to look closely, you can see that the Leaning Tower of Pisa (in the upper right-hand corner) is lit with the colors of Italy's flag. It is magical to look at at night: it seems to shimmer and sparkle, and it provides a striking contrast against the dark sky. As this photograph demonstrates, it is so bright that anyone standing in front of it is cast into silhouette. I have always loved Disneyland for its superb attention to detail, and this definitely extends to its use of light.

Week #4 Sunset

I took this photo on the Top of the World at the Laguna Beach during sunset.  From this picture we can see the colors in the sky are mostly blue, red and yellow.  All those colors mixed together and became a white spot at the bottom of the sky, and that was where the sun was.  In the future lighting design about the sunset, I will choose blue, red and yellow as my hues.

Week # 4 All Hail The King

I took a photo with a pro League of Legends player, Dyrus. After looking at I realized that the light was at first too harsh that had too much light. My friend later told me that it wasn't like that, the light was meant to show the holy awesomeness of him. He was of course joking, but I started to think and kinda agreed with him that though the light may display a very harsh tone it did had some aspects of symbolism. That in the gaming world this guy is like a god and that the light in the photo emphasis the power he has in that world. All and all it was a good day watching video games, eating, taking photos. I choose this photo because I like how the position of the light gave the photo a biblical feeling of were in the present of a important person.
