Week 6: Skating in the Dark

I used to love going roller skating. It was definitely one of my favorite activities and really the only way I could exercise without realizing that it was a workout. Looking back, it wasn't just the skating that was fun. It was the experience of it all. Walking in and hearing the music blaring, filling me with excitement as I hurriedly put on my skates; I was always the last one on the rink. Stepping onto the skating platform, being plunged into darkness momentarily, then seeing all of the multi colored lights from all around the room, completely surrounding me in blinking colors. The music was great but the lights, that's what made it. When you turned the regular lights back all you saw was a room that resembled a gymnasium. Lights are transformative. They work well with darkness to create an entirely new space with the flick of a few switches. And they have the ability to mold one's experience, like the lights at the skating rink did to mine.

  1. Very nice observations about light - places like this are, as you say, a perfect example of how much light can transform a space and emotions :)
